Position: Senior Research Associate/Research Fellow in Environmental Data Science

Duties: You will work with other members of the Centre of Excellence (CEH) in a collaborative approach to tackle methodological challenges in answering key environmental questions. Pursuing world-leading research in the area of remote sensing and spatial data science, which supports the strategic aims of LEC and CEH. Publication of research outputs in high impact remote sensing and related journals. Contributing to major national and international research projects and initiatives; presenting research at leading national and international conferences; developing the esteem of LEC and CEH. Contributing to advancing research and teaching collaborations with international partners
Requirements: We are looking to appoint a researcher with experience in analysing large remotely sensed images (e.g., time-series analysis, classification), and the development and application of modern spatial data science methods, including spatial and space-time statistics, machine learning and/or deep learning algorithms

The Centre of Excellence is being established with investment from the two institutions including a series of Professorial appointments who will set the agenda for the Centre of Excellence. You will work with other members of the Centre of Excellence in a collaborative approach to tackle methodological challenges in answering key environmental questions. The appointment represents an exceptional opportunity to work with CEH’s extensive national capability data archives and additional sources of environmental data. We are also interested in developing new international research avenues, for example, in Africa and China. We are looking to appoint a researcher with experience in analysing large remotely sensed images (e.g., time-series analysis, classification), and the development and application of modern spatial data science methods, including spatial and space-time statistics, machine learning and/or deep learning algorithms. We are particularly interested in candidates who can combine new remotely sensed image datasets (e.g., from the Copernicus Sentinel programmes) with existing CEH “ground data” to answer new environmental science questions and innovate new products. Application areas of primary interest are those relevant to CEH (i.e., ecology and hydrology), and include land cover change monitoring and long-term environmental monitoring. We are seeking to recruit an individual with leadership potential and with a demonstrable capability to produce research outputs that are of the highest international scientific quality, to perform research with significant real-world impact, and to successfully acquire external funding to support a substantive programme of research.
