Duties: The focus of your research will include engaging with a broad spectrum of stakeholders to define energy storage requirements within the context of vehicle-to-grid and to derive novel models of customer usage and acceptance of the technology; supporting the collection and analysis of real-world and laboratory data relevant to vehicle-to-grid operation; deriving new models of battery performance and degradation that feed into the broader techno-economic analysis of electric vehicles and their integration within a future smart grid environment
Requirements: Masters degree (MSc, MEng) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline. Possession of a PhD/EngD within a complementary field of research – e.g. energy storage, energy systems. Fundamental understanding of the model development process for energy storage and energy systems, that includes problem formulation, experimental design for parameterisation and validation and simulation using Matlab and Simulink. Evidenced capability for processing and analyzing large volumes of experimental data using appropriate tools such as Matlab. Good understanding of the systems integration challenge of energy storage systems based on Li-ion battery technology, including thermal management, energy balancing and diagnostics. Good understanding the broader research landscape relating to energy storage, electric vehicles and vehicle charging and smart-grid technology Ability to publish excellent energy related research in high impact Journals. Good effective communication (oral and written) skills, presentation skills, training skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team on research programmes. Ability to initiate, plan organise, implement and deliver programmes of work to tight deadlines. Competency in IT and familiarity with a computerised environment. Evidence of strong research potential (Research Fellow) and a range of Quantitative and/or Qualitative research skills. WMG have an exciting opportunity to research the benefits of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology in the real-world and to develop new holistic models of how best to optimise the ever-increasing integration of electric vehicles and our energy infrastructure. This position requires you to work across a range of projects, funded through Innovate UK and the EPSRC. You will have the opportunity to liaise with leading UK universities, industrial partners developing innovative new technology and end-users seeking to install and use new electric vehicle charging infrastructure. You will be able to evidence your capability in the areas of systems modelling and simulation, the analysis and management of large data-sets and the design of new experimental procedures to support model parameterisation and validation. You will have undertaken complimentary research as part your PhD/EngD study and potentially be able to demonstrate your capability through appropriate industrial experience. You will join an internationally leading research team within WMG comprising of over 40 academics, researchers and doctoral students. The Energy Innovation Centre includes a ?13m Battery Materials Scale-Up Pilot Line, which provides a one-stop-shop for the development of new battery chemistries from concept to fully proven traction batteries, available in sufficient quantities for industrial scale testing.
