Position: Postdoctoral Fellow in Large Eddy Simulations of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer
Institution: Stockholm University
Department: Department of Meteorology
Location: Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden
Duties: Postdoctoral Fellow in Large Eddy Simulations of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer. In this project, we have a vision of further developing the Large Eddy Simulations technique for the atmospheric boundary layer for very large problems, such as simulating the full diurnal cycle with both the nighttime and daytime turbulence well resolved. We intend to examine all numerical aspects, and especially the lower boundary condition, with the aim of making the code efficient for exascale computing
Requirements: Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in meteorology, oceanography, climate science, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics or in a related field; doctoral candidates may apply for the position if they expect to receive the PhD degree before the starting date of the position. Text: Postdoctoral Fellow in Large Eddy Simulations of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Ref. No. SU FV-4077-18 Apply Mail a friend Share Share Tweet at the Department of Meteorology . Closing date: 21 January 2019. At the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department employs some 65 individuals, of which about 30 are scientists, 20 PhD students and 15 in the administration and the technical support. The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research ( www.bolin.su.se ) and together with three other departments at the university cover research of most of the important aspects of the climate system. For more information about MISU, see www.misu.su.se . Project description In this project, we have a vision of further developing the Large Eddy Simulations technique for the atmospheric boundary layer for very large problems, such as simulating the full diurnal cycle with both the nighttime and daytime turbulence well resolved. We intend to examine all numerical aspects, and especially the lower boundary condition, with the aim of making the code efficient for exascale computing. The project, funded by the Swedish e-science Research Centre, is a collaboration between the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University, the Department of Mechanics at the Royal Technical University, Computational Mathematics at Linköping University and the Rossby Centre at SMHI. Qualification requirements Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in meteorology, oceanography, climate science, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics or in a related field. Assessment criteria The assessment is based on previous research experience. Research on developing and/or applying LES codes on atmospheric problems will be an advantage. Doctoral candidates may apply for the position if they expect to receive the PhD degree before the starting date of the position. The applicant should have excellent knowledge of both oral and written English. Terms of employment The position involves full-time employment for two years with possible extension. Start date during winter/spring 2019 as per agreement. Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
