Apply online Section for Monitoring and Data is responsible for planning and data collection on scientific monitoring surveys and from the commercial fishery. The data collection is conducted using the Institute’s own research vessels and from commercial ships at sea and in fishing ports around Denmark. Data collection also covers environmental variables (physical and biological oceanography, plankton and fish larvae sampling). The section is also responsible for the data processing and data support for assessments as well as research projects using both data from the Institute's own scientific surveys and fishery-dependent data as well as ecosystems data. These comprehend information on fish and shellfish species' biology such as identification and distribution, age readings, sex ratios and maturity determination. Time series of these data are provided for the assessment of fish and shellfish stocks and are an essential contribution for e.g. studies on the effect of climate change on marine fisheries resources. The section contributes to the development of new observation technologies and provides maintenance of scientific equipment at sea with RV Dana and on shore. Furthermore, the section provides the vessel crew for RV Havfisken and other smaller research vessels. The advertised position includes the planning and organizing of acoustic / pelagic trawl surveys for monitoring of pelagic fish stocks, application of state-of-the-art acoustic methods for recording of pelagic fish abundance and distribution and complementary collection and analysis of physical and biological environmental conditions. Qualifications Applicants are required to have: a M.Sc. (or Ph.D.) in quantitative fisheries biology or zoology In-depth understanding of bio-acoustic methods Experience with acoustic data acquisition and processing in respect to quantitative abundance estimation Experience with acoustic monitoring survey design and performance at sea Additional desirable skills would be: Knowledge in physical oceanography and stock assessment methods for pelagic fish species Familiarity with biological/ecological time series data and fisheries oceanographic principles is desirable The position requires ability to go at sea on research vessel cruises (Northeast Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea) for about 4 - 5 weeks per year and includes travel activities to ICES Expert Groups for about 3 - 4 weeks per year in total. The advertised position is attached to the section for monitoring and data in Hirtshals where the technical expertise on acoustic monitoring equipment and the methodological skills is located. Cooperation with other DTU institutes and DTU’s research groups will require frequent travelling between Hirtshals and Copenhagen.
