Research Associate 8009BR Cardiff School of Engineering Research Advert Research Associate Cardiff School of Engineering Applications are invited from highly motivated researchers for a postdoctoral research position immediately available in the Multiscale Multiphysics Design Optimisation (M2DO) lab, led by H Alicia Kim. The research project is sponsored by Rolls-Royce. The primary research focus is to develop level set based topology optimization for coupled thermo-mechanical aerospace structures in a high-temperature environment. Candidates must have a strong background in topology optimization, thermomechanics, heat transfer, finite element method and C++ computer programming, and be committed to applying rigorous mathematical tools to structural design and optimization. Experience or interest in developing numerical methods and/or large-scale high performance computing and collaborative software development is also desirable. Those with research experience and interests in the following areas are encouraged to apply: • Computational methods for structural mechanics and/or heat transfer • PDE-constrained optimisation • Topology optimization • Coupled sensitivity analysis The post is based in the Cardiff University however, the M2DO lab is based both at Cardiff and UC San Diego and constituted of seven postdoctoral researchers and four PhD students. The Postdoctoral Research Associate is expected to work closely with the M2DO team at both sites. In addition, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will closely liaise with Rolls-Royce in meeting their deliverables and the post will include secondments and visits to Rolls-Royce in Derby. Therefore good team working and communication skills are essential and should be demonstrated in the application. In addition, a demonstrated ability and dedication to meet deadlines is critical. This is an exciting research opportunity with an exposure to the international academic environment as well as the engineering industry. Research • To conduct research within level set based topology optimization for coupled thermo-mechanical aerospace structures in a high-temperature environment and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field • To participate in School research activities. • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects Other • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.
