Position: Senior Research Associate - Epidemiology and Medical Statistics

Duties: Your research will focus on using Mendelian Randomization for mediation analysis – the study of factors that lie on the causal pathways from exposures to outcomes. Mediation analysis can increase understanding of mechanisms, provide aetiological insight, and identify potential intervention targets. Mendelian Randomization for mediation is a powerful tool that uses genetic variants as instrumental variables for exposures and mediators of interest, thus avoiding bias due to confounding and measurement error. Mediation analysis is a hot topic in epidemiology, and newly developed statistical methods alongside the increasing availability of ’omics data provide great scope for exciting research
Requirements: You will have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in medical statistics, epidemiology (with strong statistical skills), or a related quantitative discipline and a track record of published research. You will have experience of advanced statistical methods, ideally including Mendelian Randomization
   
Text: ACAD103647 06-Dec-2018 This post offers an excellent opportunity for a talented postdoctoral epidemiologist or medical statistician to join the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (MRC IEU) within the Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, one of the leading centres for Epidemiology in the UK. Your research will focus on using Mendelian Randomization for mediation analysis - the study of factors that lie on the causal pathways from exposures to outcomes. Mediation analysis can increase understanding of mechanisms, provide aetiological insight, and identify potential intervention targets. Mendelian Randomization for mediation is a powerful tool that uses genetic variants as instrumental variables for exposures and mediators of interest, thus avoiding bias due to confounding and measurement error. Mediation analysis is a hot topic in epidemiology, and newly developed statistical methods alongside the increasing availability of ’omics data provide great scope for exciting research. In this role, you will have scope to carry out applied and/or methodological projects, depending on your skill set and interests. You will join a collaborative and supportive research group, whose key research interests lie in social epidemiology (understanding social causes and consequences of health, and the causal mechanisms through which they arise) and in the aetiology of obesity and cardiometabolic health. You will work within the dynamic, multidisciplinary environment of the MRC IEU. You will collaborate with colleagues both from within the MRC IEU and other UK and international experts. Opportunities for continued training and career development are available, including the short courses run by the department of Population Health Sciences and the University of Bristol staff development programme. You will have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in medical statistics, epidemiology (with strong statistical skills), or a related quantitative discipline and a track record of published research. You will have experience of advanced statistical methods, ideally including Mendelian Randomization. The post is funded by the Medical Research Council. This is a 12 month maternity cover post.
