Duties: You will lead a group, including budget responsibility, comprising physicists (PhD), engineers, and technicians. Your group operates and extends the synchronization systems and arrival-time diagnostics and further develops these to fulfill future requirements. These range from project planning to the design, construction, and documentation of the systems. You will actively participate in these tasks. Collaboration between organizational units is an important component at PSI, and will require your support and engagement
Requirements: You possess a university degree in electrical engineering, physics, or equivalent, preferably with a PhD. Furthermore, you have expertise in highly precise electro-optical signals and their use in timing measurements in the femtosecond range. Text: The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people. PSI operates the large research facility SwissFEL, one of the five free-electron lasers world-wide which generate hard X-Ray pulses with durations in the femtosecond range. This requires a highly precise timing reference which is distributed to various systems in the facility, ranging from RF systems with frequencies between 3 and 12 GHz, mode-locked lasers, and arrival-time diagnostics for electron bunches and laser pulses. As a timing reference, both ultra-stable RF signals and pulses from mode-locked reference lasers are used, and distributed in length-stabilized optical fibers. For our Measurement Systems and Synchronization Section we are looking for a Group Leader Timing and Synchronization (80 - 100%) Your tasks You will lead a group, including budget responsibility, comprising physicists (PhD), engineers, and technicians.
