Position: Postdoctoral Fellow
Institution: Paul Scherrer Institut
Department: Swiss Light Source (SLS)
Location: Villigen, Aargau, Switzerland
Duties: The recent development of native-SAD phasing using 6 keV X-Rays has made the method more accessible for real-life targets. However, many systems with low sulfur content and low diffraction resolution (> 3 Å) are still out of reach. You will have a unique opportunity to further improve native-SAD phasing using lower X-Ray energies (3 – 5 keV) by exploiting the latest X-Ray detector – JUNGFRAU and novel sample delivery methods and demonstrate its advantages with challenging targets like membrane proteins
Requirements: You hold a PhD degree in biology, chemistry or physics and have substantial experience in macromolecular crystallography. Working knowledge of data processing programs, software for phasing and refinement is a must. Experience in computer programming would be an advantage. If you are a good team player with fine communication skills and sense of responsibility, this position will offer a great opportunity for you to develop your research career in an exciting and highly multidisciplinary environment

Text: The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people. The Swiss Light Source (SLS) is one of the most advanced radiation sources worldwide. The SLS Macromolecular Crystallography Group operates two high performance undulator beam lines as well as a state-of-the-art superbending magnet beamline for macromolecular crystallography. The Group focuses on methods development in macromolecular crystallography including advanced beamline instrumentations, novel data collection methods for experimental phasing and in situ serial crystallography. We are also involved in the development of serial femtosecond crystallography at the SwissFEL. For the MX Applications Group we are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow Native-SAD phasing at low energies Your tasks The recent development of native-SAD phasing using 6 keV X-Rays has made the method more accessible for real-life targets.
