Duties: The incumbent will work in the Fisheries Monitoring Branch of the Fishery Statistics Division. The incumbent will provide estimates of commercial fishery discards from fisher reported logbooks and fishery observer reported data. The incumbent will assist in developing standardized methods for estimating commercial fishery discards from self-reported vessel discard data, observer data, and other data collection programs. The incumbent will also assist in the construction of commercial fishery discard size composition files for use in fisheries stock assessments
Requirements: Must have a Master’s degree or higher in fisheries biology, marine science, mathematics, environmental science or related fields. At least 1 year of relevant work related experience with evidence of contributions to the dissemination of new research information. Necessary skills include extensive knowledge of database management systems (Access, Oracle) and proficiency in SAS, R, or SQL coding. Applicants must also have a general understanding of statistical analyses. Applicants must possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail and an interest and ability to learn new software

The research will involve close collaboration with scientists at RSMAS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC), Fisheries Statistics Division located on Virginia Key. The incumbent will work in the Fisheries Monitoring Branch of the Fishery Statistics Division. The incumbent will provide estimates of commercial fishery discards from fisher reported logbooks and fishery observer reported data. The incumbent will assist in developing standardized methods for estimating commercial fishery discards from self-reported vessel discard data, observer data, and other data collection programs. The incumbent will also assist in the construction of commercial fishery discard size composition files for use in fisheries stock assessments. The incumbent will work in collaboration with staff from other SEFSC laboratories and the NMFS Southeast Regional Office (SERO).
