The STScI Institutional Archives collects records, papers, institute publications, as well as other physical and digital materials documenting the intellectual, cultural, administrative and social life of STScI from conceptualization (1972) to the present. The archive illustrates the milestones of its missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST)
Requirements: Preferred enrolment in accredited Master’s program in Archives, Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, or related discipline. Recent graduates (generally past 5 years) may also apply. Proven interest in pursuing a career in archives; motivation to contribute to the Institutional Archive and the profession at large. Familiarity with archival standards such as DACS and EAD. Experience with archival collections, preferably both born-digital and analog. If analog only, hands-on experience with digitization is required
   
Text: Job Details Description Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking a part-time Processing Archivist Intern. Gain valuable skills in processing archival collections and designing archive interfaces. You will work with a team that is passionate about preserving the institutional heritage and scientific legacy of STScI through a newly created STScI Institutional Archive. The STScI Institutional Archives collects records, papers, institute publications, as well as other physical and digital materials documenting the intellectual, cultural, administrative and social life of STScI from conceptualization (1972) to the present. The archive illustrates the milestones of its missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). The institutional archive is intended to collect documentation of enduring value in a permanent institutional archive for the purpose of preserving institutional knowledge and providing insight to present and future generations through research and education. This is a paid internship that offers a flexible part-time schedule up to 20 hours per week. Roles & Responsibilities Accept, process, arrange, describe, de-duplicate and preserve analog and digital archival collections in accordance with standard archival methodologies and local policy. In coordination with Digital Archivist, describe and ingest digitized and born-digital materials including standard text OCR pdfs, audio-visual material, web content, and emails for eventual migration into a CMS. Work with Digital Archivist to define scope and suitability of donated materials for the archives; search across multiple collections to avoid duplication of effort before processing or accepting additional assets. Identify gaps in major records series and work with institute staff to capture these records. Review and update CMS metadata and/or finding aids for existing archival collections to meet archival description and communication standards, e.g., Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD). Identify conservation or retrieval issues in collections and collaborate with JHU Archives staff and STScI to ensure preservation and discoverability. Customize metadata schema to improve discoverability of archival collections. Digitize archival print collections; describe and arrange metadata for document delivery to a vendor for digitization, or scan and convert small batches of documents to OCR format. Collaborate with divisions and offices across the institute to design content delivery workflows that meet the archival needs of each office. Demonstrate dedication to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as STScI's scientific and cultural history through archival practice.
