Duties: Develop software. Build robust feature extraction methods. Take major decisions about technical architecture (Grade 8 only). Collaborate within cross-disciplinary teams and international academic and industrial consortia. Lead the software engineering for specific pieces of infrastructure, setting targets, allocating resources, monitoring progress and reporting outcomes (Grade 8 only). Take ultimate responsibility for the scientific validity, code quality, and technical deliverables for those projects (Grade 8 only). Clean, verify the quality of, and transform, large data sets. Ensure quality assurance and governance processes are adhered to when necessary
Requirements: BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Maths, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent field. Substantial experience of software engineering, having built and maintained projects of significant size (Grade 8 only). Flawless knowledge of Python and at least one JVM language. Able to solve complex problems with elegant code. Can demonstrate instances of having personally solved significant scientific problems using data science methods. Incredible attention to detail and drive for both precision and code quality. Able to collaborate effectively in a development team, sharing code openly, pair programming where helpful, but also able to sustain longitudinal focus on independent tasks. Mastery of appropriate software engineering tools and methodology, such as Git, Agile methods, and automated testing. Extensive knowledge of components from the Apache Big Data stack relevant to building real-time solutions (Grade 8 only). Able to architect sound relational and non-relational data structures. Able to provide technical leadership to a development team, solving problems, researching methods, mentoring staff, breaking up tasks and bringing together deliverables (Grade 8 only)
   
Text: Real-Time Big Data Analytics Developer Nuffield Department of Population Health, Old Road Campus, Headington, Oxford Grade 8: £39,992 - £47,722 p.a. (pro rata for part-time) The Oxford University Big Data Institute (BDI) is a new interdisciplinary research centre aiming to develop, evaluate and deploy efficient methods for acquiring and analysing biomedical data at scale and for exploiting the opportunities arising from such studies. The Nuffield Department of Population Health (NDPH), a key partner in the BDI, contains world-renowned population health research groups and is an excellent environment for multi-disciplinary teaching and research. Based in the Digital Phenotyping Group within the BDI, you will create open source infrastructure to underpin national and international collection, feature extraction, analysis, and visualisation of real-time high-frequency data streams from Wearables and Apps. Youll take source data (often protobuf) and using Apache technologies such as Spark, Storm, Kafka, and Druid, connect them to micro-services using frameworks like Dash. Youll also develop scalable pipelines to process a variety of novel data streams, using methods which include Machine Learning, and working on analyses both independently and in collaboration with the rest of the team. To be considered, you will have a BSc or MSc in computer science, maths, physics, engineering, or an equivalent field, significant experience of software engineering, having built and maintained projects of significant size and the ability to solve complex problems using elegant code. You will also be able to provide technical leadership and have exceptional attention to detail and problem solving skills.
