Text: Research Fellow in Medical Statistics Health Services Research & Policy Salary: £38,533 to £43,759 per annum, inclusive. Closing Date: Friday 03 August 2018 Reference: PHP-HSRP-2018-03-R We are seeking an enthusiastic statistician to undertake research into the statistical methods used to assess the performance of health care services. The research is designed to overcome some common practical problems, and the results of the research will be widely applicable in performance assessment as well as other areas of medical research. The post-holder must have a Master’s degree in medical statistics, epidemiology, operational research or a related field, or equivalent working experience in these fields. The role requires excellent quantitative skills. It is essential that the post holder will have knowledge and experience of advanced statistical techniques such as multilevel modelling / Bayesian analysis and multiple imputation of missing data. Experience of working on observational health care studies would be helpful but the job could suit someone with experience of analysing clinical trials or someone with a background in (quantitative) clinical epidemiology. The research will examine how measurement errors can lead to inaccurate assessments of how well a health care organisation is performing. The errors might compromise the assessments in various ways, such as resulting in biased outcome statistics for NHS hospitals. You will work on a 3-year research project that aims to develop and evaluate novel methods that identify (and potentially correct) errors within health care datasets. The work will require the post-holder to use advanced regression modelling techniques, multiple imputation methods and simulation techniques. The research addresses issues at the forefront of current knowledge on performance assessment and improved statistical methods would be widely applicable. The post is full-time and based in London. The post is funded for 36 months. The salary will be on the LSHTM Academic Pathway Grade 6, £38,533 - £43,759 per annum inclusive. You will work closely with the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a collaboration between LSHTM and The Royal College of Surgeons of England. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians who play a leading role, both nationally and internationally, in shaping and guiding large-scale evaluations of healthcare performance. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff.
