Edinburgh Genetic Evaluation Services (EGENES) is the unit within SRUC that undertakes national genetic and genomic evaluations for dairy, beef, sheep and goats. It is a world class centre operating to ICAR standards utilising high performance computing and employing one of the largest reference population of genotypes in the world. Whilst EGENES operates independently producing evaluations for its customers, those same customers enjoy the benefit of EGENES being tightly integrated with the Animal Breeding and Genomics Team meaning research activity has a very short route to market. Researchers and EGENES work very closely together resulting in a very rewarding and fast moving environment for all concerned. Our work is varied and interesting ranging from routine evaluations through to researching new phenotypes predicted from milk MIR and developed with Deep Learning. We investigate hardware acceleration of compute intensive processes and are constantly investigating new and better ways of doing things. Every day is different in EGENES. This is an opportunity to be part of a very vibrant team developing new indexes and breeding tools for farmers leading to improvements in outputs and profitability. The successful candidate will work within an integrated group of around 25 programmers and geneticists, 5 of which work directly in EGENES. We’re seeking a geneticist with experience of solving problems in genetic and genomic evaluations, one that can work within in a team and generate confidence in customers. A geneticist with a passion for making a change to the population of animals and the farmers that breed them would be considered an attractive proposition. It is as much the person as the experience that is important. EGENES is continuously developing new traits, improving existing models and procedures, contributing to ongoing research and interacting with the industry. The role requires good communication skills as there will be regular client contact. The ability to work within a team of dedicated people is an absolute must and the willingness to work until the job is done helps EGENES meet its deadlines. This implies working evenings and weekends on some occasions. It is expected that the candidate will undertake necessary research to underpin practical application of developments in genetic evaluation methodologies.
