Position: Research Assistant/Postdoctoral Fellow - Climate Impact Assessment on Vector-Borne Diseases

Duties: The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to assess climate impacts on vector-borne diseases and their insect vectors, mainly through the development of computer models to simulate the spreading of the disease. The primary research areas include risk assessment, computer modelling, understanding of disease epidemiology, and vector control at various spatial and temporal scales. In particular, mosquito and sand fly vectors and diseases transmitted by them, and the influence of climate change, are of major concern. The results of the ongoing efforts are expected to have global impact in public health management, prediction and preparation for future disease outbreaks
Requirements: The successful candidate should have a Master degree for the rank of Research Assistant and a PhD for the rank of Post-doctoral Fellow at one of the below fields of study: Biology; Ecology; Epidemiology; Bioinformatics; Computer Science. One (1) year of research experience (incl. during PhD studies). Strong programming skills (experience in C, Python, and R will be considered an advantage). Proficiency in applied mathematics

The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture. The Cyprus Institute ( www.cyi.ac.cy ) invites applications for a Research Assistant or Post-doctoral fellow position for EEWRC. The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to assess climate impacts on vector-borne diseases and their insect vectors, mainly through the development of computer models to simulate the spreading of the disease. The primary research areas include risk assessment, computer modelling, understanding of disease epidemiology, and vector control at various spatial and temporal scales. In particular, mosquito and sand fly vectors and diseases transmitted by them, and the influence of climate change, are of major concern. The results of the ongoing efforts are expected to have global impact in public health management, prediction and preparation for future disease outbreaks. The rank and the remuneration of the position will depend on the selected candidate’s qualifications. The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a period of two years, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds. Responsibilities The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities: Improve the understanding of vector biology and disease epidemiology through reviewing the current body of literature Contribute in the improvement of the existing model and develop new models for understanding environmental dependence of vectors and vector-borne diseases Contribute in publishing and communicating the research results and implications at different levels, including academic, public, and policy-related Job Requirements Required Qualifications the successful candidate should have a Master degree for the rank of Research Assistant and a PhD for the rank of Post-doctoral Fellow at one of the below fields of study: Biology Ecology Epidemiology Bioinformatics Computer Science One (1) year of research experience (incl. during PhD studies) Strong programming skills (experience in C, Python, and R will be considered an advantage) Proficiency in applied mathematics Strong analytical and organizational skills High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team Excellent knowledge of English, both verbal and writing.
