Position: Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Institution: Queen Mary University of London
Department: School of Engineering & Materials Science
Location: London, United Kingdom
Duties: In this multidisciplinary project, two electrochemical imaging techniques, light-addressable potentiometric sensors (LAPS) and scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM), will be combined for the first time to create a novel instrument suitable for functional electrochemical imaging on both sides of a layer of cells. The release of reagents locally on the apical side while continuously imaging ion concentrations and cell impedance basally will provide us with new insights into the transport mechanisms through tissues with unprecedented detail and contribute to the understanding of physiological processes and disease mechanisms
Requirements: Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in physics, chemistry or electronics and have excellent oral and written communication skills. You will work with two research groups with strong track records in the development of instrumentation for electrochemical imaging and the development of devices with different sensor functionalities. You will integrate the photo-electrochemical imaging technique LAPS with the scanning probe technique SICM and write a LabView program for controlling the imaging and data acquisition functions of the instrument. In the second part of the project, you will modify LAPS chips with compounds provided by our collaborator to achieve sensing functionality for different ions. The instrument will be validated by simultaneous apical and basal imaging of two in-vitro cell models
