Text: Job Description Job Title: Communications Adviser Reports to: Head of Communications Responsible for: No direct reports Department: Vice Chancellor’s office (Communications Team) Grade: RU07 Main purpose of the job: The Communications Adviser is part of the Communications Team, based in the ViceChancellor’s Office. The team has responsibility for building a strong profile for the University and for ensuring marketing communications with internal and external stakeholders is effective. The role holder will support the Head of Communications and Director of Communications to deliver a proactive communications function. Part of the role will involve account management to academic and non-academic (support) departments as well as a number of communications projects to support corporate priorities. Main duties and responsibilities: 1. To advise and work with academic and support departments to identify specific business area communication needs and corporate promotional opportunities, adapting the service to the needs of the Department where appropriate. 2. To project manage student facing publications Eg. prospectuses, corporate annual review and advertising campaigns for clearing and orientation and other communication projects. 3. To support and manage the development and delivery of specific communication plans and project advertising campaigns for clearing and orientation and other communication projects. 4. To help communicate key messages which promote the University brand and further its overall strategy. 5. To maximise positive awareness of the University and its activities through news stories and marketing channels. 6. To develop audio and web content to support university’s profile raising activity and provide lead generation opportunities, key messages and ensure relevance, interest and immediacy. 7. To account manage senior internal and external stakeholders. 8. To undertake other communications tasks, or other duties, as required. Person Specification The Person Specification focuses on the knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required to undertake the role effectively. Requirements Essential Measured by: Education and Qualifications • At least a degree-level qualification or equivalent work experience. (A) Knowledge and skills  An excellent command of the English language.  Experience and knowledge of the full range of communications and marketing techniques. (A), (I) (A), (I) Work experience  Significant communications experience in a large, complex organisation.  Experience of developing and implementing communication and marketing plans, strategies, campaigns and projects.  A good grasp of project management, including experience of putting together marketing collateral or other publications. (A), (I) (A), (I), (E) (A), (I) Communication skills  Tact, diplomacy, strong oral and interpersonal skills with a flexible, can do, and proactive approach to work.  The ability to write copy for a variety of audiences, in print and online. (A), (I) (A), (I), (E) Other requirements  Will be expected to engage in appropriate professional development activities to maintain knowledge and skills and develop their thinking (A) Desirable • Experience of working in a communications or marketing role in higher education. • Relevant professional accreditation. • Experience of working in providing account management support for departments/clients. (A) , (I) (A) (A) , (I) Additional Information  Salary range: £35,135 to £38,051 p.a. The appointment is usually made at the bottom of the range  The appointment is offered on a permanent basis immediately, subject to references  The annual leave entitlement is 30 days p.a., additionally there are 3 - 4 days when the university closes for Christmas  Your normal hours of work will be between 35 to 40 hours per week, plus a lunch break of one hour each day.
