Responsibilities include building and maintaining experiments, supporting the· management of a network of over 40 computers and servers, training instructors in operation of the experiments, assisting with student laboratory instruction, supervising student assistants, and purchasing equipment and supplies. The position requires working with faculty, students, and staff to develop new experiments. Engineering activities include conception, design, construction, and testing of experiments, as well as documentation and editing of instructional materials. The two courses managed by this position are critical to the success of the department's undergraduate major. It is in Physics 111 that students learn to do experimental physics, from experimental design, to hands-on experience in acquiring data and troubleshooting apparatus, to analyzing and communicating results in a professional manner. More than any other course, the 111 lab prepares students to work productively in an academic or industrial research environment. Many graduate student instructors’ benefit in similar ways from the training and guidance provided by this position, improving their abilities to conduct their own research and eventually teach their own courses. Faculty teaching the 111 lab are largely freed from day-to-day management of the course and troubleshooting of experiments so they can focus on working directly with students.
