Duties: The VRVis Research Center and the Center for Water Resource Systems (TU Vienna) offer a paid diploma thesis in the field of flood simulation. We investigate simulation and visualization techniques to support decision making in flood management and hazard mapping. Recently we were appointed to recalculate the Austrian flood hazard map HORA. Possible topics include Development and validation of internal and global boundary conditions, Efficient shallow water schemes for adaptive grids, Modeling of precipitation and infiltration and subsequent validation
Requirements: We are looking for a motivated student (f/m) who is interested in computational fluid dynamics and flood simulation. In particular, familiarity with hyperbolic equations, such as conservation and balance laws, and finite volume schemes is advantageous. Knowledge of C++ or at least willingness to learn C++ is required to support the further development of the simulator

Open Position: Diploma Thesis/Internship Diploma Thesis in applied Mathematics/Physics/Informatics "Numerical Methods for Flood Simulation" About us The VRVis Research Center and the Center for Water Resource Systems (TU Vienna) offer a paid diploma thesis in the field of flood simulation. We investigate simulation and visualization techniques to support decision making in flood management and hazard mapping. Recently we were appointed to recalculate the Austrian flood hazard map HORA . The new, more accurate hazard map will be based on simulations using our in-house flood simulation engine. Our simulator solves the shallow water equations on graphics cards (GPUs) using C++ and the CUDA programming language. Fast parallel execution of the solver on the GPU enables large-scale simulations. The numerical solver is based on a finite volume scheme, a common method for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations.
