Text: Wage Undergrad Campus/Location: University Park Campus Date Announced: 09/13/2017 Date Closing: open until filled Job Number: 74458 Work Unit: Applied Research Laboratory Department: Autonomy, Perception, and cognition Description The Autonomous Control and Intelligent Systems Division of the Applied Research Laboratory is continuing a project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research’s Swampworks Division to explore role-based cognitive autonomy for advanced autonomous robots. The project involves modeling human decision makers in a rule-based cognitive architecture (Soar) and embedding these roles in ROS-based (Robot Operating System) ground, underwater, and air robots. Mandatory Position Description Requirements: We are looking for several highly motivated students in Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Math, or closely related majors. C++ programming skills are required. The following is preferred: Experience in Soar, ACT-R, machine learning, computational vision, GPU, FPGA, ROS, JavaScript, python, robotics or Deep Belief Networks; familiarity with Unreal or Unity game engines and Linux/Ubuntu; and the ability to address basic-science problems in highly demanding real-world environments. Successful candidates will be expected and encouraged to publish their research, and it is intended for theses to address project-related challenges. The selected candidates will work up to 20 hours per week during the Fall/Spring semesters and up to 40 hours per week during the Summer. Job Requirements: Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen to apply and may be subject to a government security investigation. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
