Position: Temporary Hourly Tutor (Math Center)

Text: The Math Center tutors will work primarily with students who are in the developmental math courses offered at CBC. He/She must be open to learning and implementing effective tutoring methods. Training will be provided. This position reports to the Math Center Developer Specialist. Columbia Basin College employs temporary employees to meet short-term and intermittent workload needs. Temporary Hourly employees have non-student status and are defined as those staff employees not occupying a budgeted line position (an appointed position) and are temporary, at-will employees. Temporary hourly positions are exempt from the Higher Education Personnel rules and must not work 1050 hours or more in any twelve (12) consecutive month period from the original date of hire. The length of employment and the number of hours worked per week are undetermined and may be continued or terminated based on funding, workload fluctuations, etc. There is no contract or guarantee of continued employment. Primary Responsibilities: Provide math tutoring to CBC students in developmental math classes; Offer assistance with developing study strategies; Help to develop and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning; Tutor students in individual and group settings; Demonstrate multiple approaches to solving a mathematical problem; Assess student progress and report progress to Math Center Developer; Work with students to provide an individual tutoring plan; Actively participate in tutor training and follow-up sessions; and Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in mathematics or related field; Demonstrated experience teaching and/or tutoring at-risk, low income, and/or bilingual students; and Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of math concepts, including, but not limited to, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, linear algebra, pre-calculus, statistics, calculus, and differential equations. Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual/biliterate in Spanish/English. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Attendance/Punctuality: Is consistently at work and on time; ensure work responsibilities are covered when absent; arrive at meetings and appointments on time. Oral Communication: Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listen and get clarification; respond well to questions; demonstrate group presentation skills; participate in meetings. Written Communication Skills: Write clearly and informatively; edit work for spelling and grammar; vary writing style to meet needs; present numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information. Computer Skills : Demonstrate the ability to use instructional technology and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access). PROCESS NOTE: In accordance with the Child/Adult Information Act, RCW 43.43.830, the candidate selected for hire will be subject to a Criminal History Background Check. Additionally, pursuant to RCW 43.43.845(3) an inquiry will be made for employees and volunteers in the Washington Courts database for civil adjudications as a condition for consideration of employment.
